Knowing where to start is half the battle. Whether you’re a seasoned sewist or just beginning you’re in the right place.
Here are 7 easy steps to help you get started the Sew Chill way.
- STEP 1: Gather basic sewing equipment. Choose a reliable sewing machine and an iron with an ironing board. This is your foundation.
- STEP 2: Gather basic supplies. You need a needle, thread, pins, and fabric scissors. Include a measuring tape and seam ripper. Use a simple sewing machine or a hand-sewing kit.
- STEP 3: Learn fabric types and grain: understand woven vs. knit, right sides, and how to align grain for neat seams.
- STEP 4: Master basic stitches: practice running stitch, backstitch, slip stitch (hand) and straight/zigzag stitches on a machine.
- STEP 5: Practice cutting and measuring: lay out pattern pieces, measure twice, and cut accurately on a flat surface.
- STEP 6: Sew simple projects: start with a gift bag, scrunchie or elastic-waist skirt to build confidence.
- STEP 7: Finish seams and edges. Learn seam allowance and pressing with an iron. Understand basic finishes like zigzag, pinking shears, or serging.
The notions aisle at my local fabric store can be overwhelming. I’ve probably bought most of the gadgets at one time or another. Over the years, I’ve narrowed it down to a handful of tried-and-true tools I actually use regularly. Some of the novelty items are fun to experiment with. However, they rarely survive long in my studio. They usually end up lost in the abyss.
Notions may be purchased at your local fabric store, big box stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Walmart and even Amazon.
I did find this basic set at Hobby Lobby at a great price! Only $6.49!
